Japanana
So I visited Japan recently and spent a few days as a resident artist at Kayamori house and farm project in the mountains of Nara.
The weather wasnt great, heavy rain for the most part, so what was intended as a plein air visit was reduced to a more house-bound approach.
A charming building, with lots of character (and I became convinced that there were ghosts after my host, Aiko, showed me a number of books by the fantastic Shigeru Mizuki). In the 3 days I got a few paintings done, but another visit is definitely on the cards!
Thanks to Jamie and Aiko for being such great hosts!
A sheltered corner of Kayamori house's garden, where I hid from the rain and got eaten by mosquitoes
And then some random sketches done before bed!
And this is the linework for my Yokai pinups project, starting with the Shirime!

Hmm, not updated in a while, so here's a quick 30 min sketch of an icosahedron from this morning.
Edit 01/06/12: Passing the time with more polyhedron fun!

Death by chocolate
This week I went to an unusual event held at the flagship Cass Art store in Islington- a life drawing session run by Death drawing, an art macarbre drawing group.
The theme was Death by Chocolate and it featured 2 models interacting with cakes and chocolate. The poses were short, between 2 and 10 mins, which was great for loosening up. It would have been great to have a longer pose nearer the end as I really liked the way one model was costumed. Covered in gold dust, painted face and tribal decorations- she looked pretty badass. They were voluptuous ladies too, who are always fun to draw.
If you get a chance to go to one, i'd definitely recommend it. The venue wasn't the best; it's quite a small space so there's a bit of overcrowding. But if you want something different from the standard quiet room with only the sound of scribbling pencils and odd cough, then this is a nice change. I couldnt get Sugar, Sugar (oh honey honey) out of my head for rest of the evening!!

doggies!
Awww... just stumbled across a photo of a couple of paintings from last year. They were presents for my parents and they're of my two dogs back in Hong Kong.
That's Butch on the left- some sort of pekingese mix, and Max on the right- a beagle mix. No pedigrees for us!
I wish i'd taken pictures before I sent them off. This pic was taken by my dad so it's quite a low resolution...
